Insights into Artificial Intelligence and The Future

Some books to read.

Here are three books that offer an insight into world-class thinking about Artificial Intelligence and what the future might hold.

Homo Deus – A Brief History of Tomorrow.

Author:  Yuval Noah Harari. Published by Vintage Profile Books (UK)/Hachette Book Group (USA)

This book is from the author of “Sapiens”, about the history of mankind.  In this book Dr. Harari explores the projects and dreams that will shape our world in the future, from overcoming death to the creation of artificial intelligence. He asks fundamental questions about what the future holds. Some of the comments from the jacket will give you an idea of the range of topics: War is Obsolete, Famine is Disappearing and Death is just a Technical Problem. This book has sold multiple millions of copies.

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism – The fight for a human future at the new frontier of power.

Author: Shoshana Zuboff. Publisher: Profile Books

Professor Zuboff has written what Fintan O’Toole of the Irish Times Newspaper described as, quite possibly, “the single most important book about politics, economics, culture and society in this century”. This book looks at the surreptitious exploitation of our data. The New Yorker said it offers “a step-by-step account of the building of the digital iron cage”. Naomi Kline described this book as “an act of digital self-defence” and the Financial Times calls it ”groundbreaking”. This was a Barack Obama Pick of 2019.

Our Final Invention –  Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era

Author:  James Barrat.  Published: Thomas Dunne Books/Macmillan

This book, first published over a decade ago, predicted much of the artificial ‘intelligence explosion’ that is ripping through our culture. The book remains a thought-provoking exploration of the pursuit of artificial intelligence and the exploration of ethics. Will AI develop human intelligence? Will humans co-exist with AI, or will its fight for survival endanger us? Elon Musk named Our Final Invention one of five books everyone should read about the future.
