Senator Bernie Sanders and his wife Dr Jane O’Meara Sanders are a power couple! They were in Dublin last week. Our Founder and CEO, Ellen Gunning was lucky enough to have front-row seats for their interview in Vicar Street. What an interesting evening!! Here’s her report:
Sanders doesn’t pull his punches when he speaks about the ‘other’ America that Europeans just don’t see. His mission, on the night, was to dispel the notion of the USA being a land paved with gold. Here are some of the statistics he shared:
- Most young people in the USA will have a lower standard of living than their parents
- Workers are worse off in America today than they were 52 years ago
- 1 in 4 Americans can’t afford to fill their prescription from their doctor
- 20% of Americans who contract cancer will go bankrupt
- 60% of American citizens live pay check to pay check
- 800,000 people in the USA are homeless
- 20 million families pay 50% of their limited incomes on housing
- 85million Americans are uninsured or underinsured for healthcare
