Our Founder and CEO, Ellen Gunning met with Commissioner Michael McGrath, the EU commissioner with responsibility for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection. They met when he addressed members of the Institute of International and European Affairs ( IIEA ) in Dublin.
His address covered the European focus on the creation of a Democracy Shield and the creation of a new network of media outlets, throughout Europe, who will come together and share fact-checking protocols to give consistency to the citizens throughout the EU. Obviously, we believe that, it is important to fact check information at the point of publication, but I believe that is the second step.
The first step is to make sure that the information that journalists access is validated (which is where Mettacomms comes into the picture). Journalists should have access to wide-ranging data which offers, by its very breadth, perspective and 100% reliable sources of information to help shape articles/stories and inform readers, listeners and viewers.
Commissioner McGrath has responsibility for managing the fight against misinformation, disinformation and FIMI (Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference) – which is an area that overlaps with Mettacomms.
